Chapter 12 · 12.2
A document opens as read only
Are you opening a document but can't type anything, and most tabs are missing? Then the document is in reading view. For example, you'll only see the File and View tabs (1). There are a few possible causes.

You only have reading rights
Has someone shared the file with you, or are you opening it via a link? Then that person decides whether you can edit it. If you only have reading rights, you can read, search, print and download, but not make changes. Ask the owner to give you editing rights. You can read how sharing works in Een document delen met een collega and Een openbare link maken (lezen of bewerken).
Want to make a change anyway? Choose File and Download as to make your own copy, or ask the owner to make the change.
You've chosen Viewing yourself
At the top right of Euro-Office, you choose how you work with the document (1):
- Editing: make changes.
- Reviewing: suggest changes. Every change is tracked, so someone else can accept or reject it. See Wijzigingen bijhouden en accepteren.
- Viewing: view the file without making changes.
Does it say Viewing here? Click it and choose Editing.

The file is locked
Do you see the message Document is locked for editing or The file is being edited in another app? Then someone has the file open in another program, for example in Word via the sync app. You can read what to do in Saving or syncing isn't working.
The message This file is opened in viewing mode. The file is locked for editing, or your access rights don't allow editing. means the same thing: either the file is locked, or you only have reading rights.
The document is protected
The creator can protect a document on the Protection tab, for example with the option No changes (Read only). You can then only read the document, even if you have editing rights. Ask the creator to remove the protection, or for the password if they've secured the protection with one.
It's a PDF
A PDF first opens for reading, filling in and adding comments. If you want to change the text yourself, choose to edit the PDF. You can read how to do that in Editing a PDF.
The file has been saved as read only
Do you see Read only and a message that you need to save the file under a different name or in a different location? Then choose File and Save Copy As. You then continue working in the copy.
