*****Hosting package without a domain name (hosting only)
Getting a hosting package without a domain name
You can order a hosting package without a domain name, also called Hosting only. However, we do need a domain name to add the hosting package to our system. With hosting only, you get a subdomain from us in the form klantxx.webawere.nl. You can then reach the hosting package with us through it.
Transferring your domain name later
If you plan to transfer your domain name to us eventually, it may be easier not to order hosting only but to enter your domain name straight away when ordering. Just don't enter the transfer code yet, so the domain name is not transferred. Later, when you want to transfer the domain name, you can start the transfer yourself via the transfer centre. The only issue is that until the transfer your domain name keeps pointing to the old provider. That is not a problem, though, because you can solve it with the hosts option as described in this article. This is a better option than a temporary (sub)domain name, because you are testing on the actual final domain name. In that case you don't need to read the rest of this article.
How ordering works:
- In the main menu, choose the HOSTING ONLY option
- Look up the domain name (enter the domain name in the first field and the extension such as .nl, .com etc. in the second). The domain name must already be active on the internet, otherwise it will not be accepted.
- Choose the package you want and complete the order. Once the order has been processed, the domain name is automatically added to our nameservers ns1.webawere.nl (ip 83.96.159.26) and ns2.webawere.nl (ip 188.122.88.125). You then need to change the nameservers of your domain, which is registered elsewhere, to these. You can often do this yourself in a management screen at the domain provider, or you can email their support asking them to link the domain to the nameservers ns1.webawere.nl and ns2.webawere.nl.
Hosting on your own subdomain
You can also use a subdomain: if you have a domain name elsewhere, you can for example create webok.yourdomain.xx. Simply enter that subdomain when ordering. Here too, the subdomain must already be active on the internet. If you have only just created a subdomain, it can take up to about 4 hours before it works.
Nameservers
Preferably, use our nameservers/DNS as described above. If you don't want to or can't link our nameservers to the domain name, you can also set up the nameservers/DNS elsewhere. This does require some knowledge of how DNS works, as it is easy to make a mistake. Unfortunately we do not provide support for setting up the DNS at your domain provider, so ask them to do it for you if needed.
- If you don't use our nameservers, it is important to keep the DNS with us and the DNS elsewhere identical. If you know exactly what you are doing, you can choose to maintain only a few DNS records with us. In the control panel you can see what the DNS looks like with us, and therefore which A/CNAME records need to be set elsewhere.
- Websitepanel/Windows: if you don't use our mail server, make sure mail is completely disabled in the control panel and that the MX records with us point elsewhere. If you don't, mail sent from the hosting server will not reach your external mail.
- DirectAdmin/Linux: if you don't use our mail server, choose MX records in the control panel and untick 'Use this server to handle my emails'. You also need to point the MX records to the correct mail server yourself. If you don't, mail sent from our servers will not reach your external mail server.
- What exactly should you enter in the DNS? Simply log in to our control panel and choose DNS. There you can see what the DNS looks like with us; the easiest way is to copy it exactly at your domain provider. Ask them for help if needed; we can't help you with this because we have no insight into the systems of every provider.
If you choose hosting only, we charge a small fee per hosting only domain (except for resellers). On the one hand you pay for the use of our DNS for this domain (we have to add the domain to our general DNS for it to work correctly), and on the other hand you pay for adding the domain to the hosting package; every domain added to a hosting server uses extra resources.
